Re: New Gig Thread
Got tickets to see Andrew Bird at the Beacon in May. Wanted to see Pulp at Radio City but it sold out in 5 minutes. Ticket brokers suck.

Re: Recently viewed films
Enjoyed Tintin, and don't really care that it wasn't like the books. Some absolutely breathtaking action sequences, a fun story that fizzed along at a headlong pace and a lot of humor. Why are people so hung up with films being slavishly faithful to written works?

Re: New Gig Thread
A bit late on this one, but I was in LA two weeks ago and attended a tribute concert to Bob Mould at the magnificent Disney Hall. What a fantastic night. Lots of old Hüsker Dü and Sugar material. Appearances by Gave Grohl, Ryan Adams and Britt Daniel of Spoon, among others. Highlights for me were Rya...

Re: Tom Waits- "Bad As Me"
Piece in this week's New Yorker on "Bad as Me" by the critic Sasha Frere-Jones which has some interesting parts about Waits and Dylan but which ultimately says very little about the new record other than that his song "Talking at the Same Time" could be a signature song for the ...

Re: Favorite Albums Of 2011 (So Far)
The thing that 's different about TWL is that it has more outright stompers than their recent efforts. I'm thinking particularly of "I Might" and "Standing O". Also love the Nieve-like keyboards in places. I was worried that "One Sunday Morning" would be too long, but i...

Nothing's gonna top Wilco's "The Whole Love." Best album I've heard in a few years.

Finally got a chance to buy the new Wilco - should arrive soon, along with St. Vincent's latest. Got my eye on Nick Lowe's new album too, but it will have to wait.

David Bowie - Glass Spider Tour in Anaheim, CA. Utter crap.
But I saw him years later at Queens College (post-Heathen) and he blew my socks off.

I will vouch for that- the whole area is morphing around us. As you note Poughkeepsie is changing as we speak but it does have a way to go. Beacon is hot and getting hotter. I can vouch for your neck of the woods as I am working in Pawling today filling in it at one our local branch offices and bou...

Re: My Little Town
Interesting. This has been coming for a while. When I lived in Poughkeepsie it was just starting to turn around. Still, you wouldn't want to go for a walk downtown after dark. Now they have several restaurants and nightclubs along Main St. (formerly crack town). Our town (Pawling) is still fairly un...

I'd say it's about a 1000% improvement on the Columbia vinyl. Better in every way.strangerinthehouse wrote:Has anybody here actually ordered this? I'd be curious to hear how vastly different from the original vinyl it sounds.
I have vinyl copy from Israel I think and I love it. Just wondering if it's worth the $40.

I think "The Reason Why" is a fine song. For me that's the most "hit-worthy" thing on the album, but it's too still too literate. Christopher, I don't really understand your comment there.

Completely sublime as expected. Their playing and singing is better than ever. Far less banter than when I saw them in the small Junction. Every song comes over perfectly, and the doubly whammy of two of my very favourites of Montezuma straight into He Doesn't Know Why was just jaw-dropping. Only c...

I'm very excited because they've been playing a very fixed setlist this year, a nice mix of 10 from HP, 6 from FF (pretty much all my faves apart from Oliver James) and 2 from SG + Silver Dagger, trad song made famous by Joan Baez (known to me from Dylan Live 1964). All looking great, despite the r...

Re: Recent CD Purchases
Picked up the new Ron Sexsmith album. Definitely a bigger, more produced sound than his last few efforts. Not sure what to think yet. A lot to like but I don't know that any of the songs have really grabbed me yet. Gonna give it some time. Really enjoying this after a few listens. "The Reason ...
